CayCan Safety was originally started by Doug Fulgham in June of 2000. Doug had been involved in almost every aspect of the highway transportation industry. He started as a heavy duty mechanic and later found himself in the driver seat. He drove oversize loads across the US and Canada and experienced the joy and pain of owning his own truck. Later he stepped into the dispatch office. Finally an opportunity came along for him to become a Commercial Transportation Officer for Alberta Transportation. While there he became one of the few officers certified by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance to train other officers in the inspection process, how to identify violations, and the Out of Service Criteria inspectors were required to understand.

One day, Doug received a message from the Department of Vehicle Licensing for the Royal Cayman Islands Government. They were looking to provide training to government inspectors on how to handle heavy commercial vehicles. After some discussions and the details were ironed out. Doug travelled down to the Cayman Islands to provide the requested training. On the flight home from that experience, Doug decided he enjoyed this type of work and decided to incorporate a new business when he returned home.

Taking from the positive experience Doug combined his local Canadian Pride with the Cayman Islands who were the catalyst to this decision. Putting Canada and Cayman together, the name "CayCan" was decided. This was further symbolized in the company logo which features an illustration of a Turtle (a symbol of the Cayman Islands) with a distinctive Canadian Maple Leaf incorporated on the shell.

As the company was founded, Doug's son Kris (aged 14 at the time) begin taking an interest in the business and found himself working part time for the company assisting with auditing drivers logbooks, developing written safety and maintenance programs for clients, and other odd jobs for the company. Kris would continue working for the company until deciding to gain experience working for other companies. In 2015, Kris was in charge of the entire National Safety Code Program for the entire Ledcor Group of Companies. This was a dynamic and challenging role as Ledcor had operated in various industries with a diverse set of challenges across all of Canada.

By 2018, Doug was looking to spend more time doing things aren't considered work. At this time, Kris decided to make the leap back to CayCan Safety. This transition came with a massive leap of faith. In order to be viable, it was determined that Kris needed to obtain his Third Party Auditor Certification from Alberta Transportation. However, due to restrictions in the program, Kris would not be able to apply without first leaving his role at Ledcor. After a stressful period of interviews, exams, mock audits, and other obstacles, Kris found himself with his final task. Conduct a full NSC Audit while being supervised and graded by an Alberta Transportation Investigator. Finally, after all of those steps, his fate was held in the hands of the supervising investigator. Unsure and full of fear and doubt, Kris finally received the news that Alberta Transportation has accepted him into the Certified Third Party Auditor Program. From there, Kris took over the operations of CayCan and is working to make sure it lives up to Doug's reputation.
