Do you need an ELD?

There are lots of misconceptions around whether or not a carrier is required to have an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) installed in their vehicle(s) as of January 1, 2023 in Alberta. Here’s a quick and easy flow chart to determine your requirements.

First thing first, carriers operating under a Safety Fitness Certificate with a “Provincial” operating status are not subject to the Federal Hours of Service requirements and have no requirement to operate using an ELD.

Alternatively, carriers operating with a “Federal” operating status will be required to have a certified ELD installed in their commercial vehicle(s) unless they meet one of these conditions.

  • The vehicle is older than model year 2000, or

  • The driver is operating under the 160 Kilometer Exemption (the driver operates within 160 kilometers of their home terminal, returns to the home terminal at the end of each day to take at least 8 hours of off-duty time, and the Carrier keeps accurate records of what time the driver went on-duty and off-duty for every day employed), or

  • The vehicle is under a rental agreement of less than 30 days (a vehicle cannot be re-rented to continue with this exemption).
